Plants lose water from the leaves in the process of matter production. Therefore, it is essential to develop various characteristics such as transpiration suppression, rapid compensation for lost water for growth and survival. Based on the evaluation of various characteristics such as transpiration suppression in leaves, water transport in stems, and water absorption in roots, we are trying to clarify the water use characteristics and survival strategies on each organ level and a whole-plant level in species of various plant ecosystems from arid to humid regions. Research topics include maintenance mechanism of water transport, drought tolerance, revegetation in dryland, resistance mechanism to pine wilt disease, and regeneration mechanism in forest.

Plants have evolved various phenotypic and physiological characteristics by adapting to variously fluctuating physical and biological environments. Among the various life history strategies of plants, we will focus on the processes from reproduction to regeneration, which are particularly sensitive to the environment. We study how plants obtain and use limited resourceses for reproduction, how seedlings regenerate, and how reproductive and regeneration processes are affected by the global environmental changes.
